The Center for Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and Nuclear Medicine

An Ongoing Commitment to Quality Patient Care

Hospital for Special Surgery's Department of Radiology and Imaging is committed to providing the highest quality in patient care. This commitment has led us to opening the Center for Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and Nuclear Medicine.

The Center is equipped with one of the most innovative learning centers for radiologists, technologists and referring physicians, and provides these medical professionals with an insider’s view into the latest in diagnostic and treatment methods using ultrasound and nuclear medicine.

“The opening of the new center is helping to expand patient treatment capacity, reduce patient wait times, and improve quality care by shortening the diagnosis to treatment cycle.”

Helene Pavlov, MD, FACR
Radiologist-in-Chief
Hospital for Special Surgery

Innovative Diagnostic and Treatment Methods

Common diagnostic and treatment procedures performed at the center include:

  • Image-guided therapeutic injections to treat tendonitis, arthritis, neuromas and other conditions
  • Image-guided aspiration of bursa, ganglions and cysts
  • Diagnosis of tears in the shoulder using dynamic ultrasound techniques
  • Evaluation of post-surgical healing and blood flow

The Center also serves as a test-bed for research into various ultrasound applications in the early diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic and rheumatologic conditions.

“The expansion is allowing us to focus our ongoing clinical work and research on pioneering treatments, such as image-guided therapeutic injections to treat conditions such as tendonitis, arthritis and neuromas. Image guided injections continue to gain increased recognition because they are minimally invasive, offer many patients immediate relief and often prolong the need for surgery.”
